Tyler, The Creator – IGOR
Columbia Records – August 2019

Gen X dad says… Full disclosure here. I have very mixed feelings about hip hop. Generally I dig the production and the creativity with samples and loops. The lyrics and delivery leave me cold most of the time. That being said, this is a pretty solid album with some really interesting sounds and song structures. I liked its blend of hip hop, R&B, soul, and a bit of jazz. Standout tracks for me were Igor’s Theme, I Think, New Magic Wand, What’s Good, and Thank You. Quite a bit more than I would have expected 🙂
Gen Z son says… This album is probably one of the best records we’ve ever gotten in the 2010’s. All the songs, mostly stuff like A Boy Is A Gun, Earfquake, and Running Out Of Time, are incredibly catchy, and they often get stuck in my head. Tyler’s rapping is also great, as well as his singing and production, and the album is strong throughout. All in all, a near-masterpiece of danceable neo-soul greatness.
