原マスミ(Masumi Hara) – 夢の4倍 (4 X The Dream)
Numero Group – 2020
(Originally released in 1984 on Yupiteru Records)
This selection was picked by Gen X dad.
Gen X dad says… Originally released in Japan in 1984 on Yupiteru Records, this reissue by Chicago’s own Numero Group bills it as “Quite possibly the most unique LP you’ll ever add to your collection.” That may be a bit hyperbolic, but it isn’t too far off. This was the second album by Hara, a multi-media artist from Japan. It covers a lot of ground over the course of its 10 tracks – from dub and new wave to a bit of folk and synth balladry all filtered through Hara’s own take on pop music. I honestly don’t know what’s going on towards the end of 音のある暮らし (Living With Sound), but I loved it. Other highlights for me were 海で暮らす (To Live In The Sea), 夜の中の夜(頂上のアベック)(The Deepest of Nights [The Zenith of Couples]), and 君の夢 (Your Dream)
Gen Z son says… A genre-bending, 10-track opus, 4 X The Dream keeps on giving. Whether it be dance-able funk like 音のある暮らし (Living With Sound), the Art-of-Noise-esque vocal sampling of 月と星のドンチャ (Doncha Of The Moon And Stars), or noisy, experimental pop of フトンメイキン (Futon Making), this album is probably one of the most diverse, and one of the most interesting, things I’ve ever heard.
